Our Vision

To do for blind people what Cochlear is doing for the deaf

200 million people will face blindness due to retinal conditions by 2020

Blind people miss out on social cues and therefore emotional connections. They’ve told us what they wish for most is to see the faces of their loved ones. In a healthy eye, the retina takes incoming light and converts it to electric pulses, these form the brain’s natural language. The brain is digital! In a degenerating retina, that connection is broken, and sight is diminished.

The solution is a bionic retina

Current implants using electrodes have returned some sight to blind people. Cochlear’s success returning hearing is partially based on coded electric pulses to stimulate the sense of hearing. The Diamond Eye™ is an optimal retina implant supporting electric pulses coded closer to the brain’s natural language. This enables the return of functional vision.

Some key things that drive our team are:

  • The Art of the Possible
  • Designing for value and purpose
  • Collaboration
  • Integrity

Our team is looking for people who thrive on addressing big challenges, get excited about building things, and are creative and critical thinkers.

Our Awards

The iBIONICS technology is novel and offers a very exciting way to deliver visual information to the retina. There are many parallels between the development of the Diamond Eye technology and the development of the cochlear implant and I believe that the iBIONICS products have the potential to improve the quality of life of people with impaired vision just as Cochlear products improve the quality of life of people with impaired hearing.
